La cuadrícula se obtiene según Real Decreto 1071/2007, de 27 de julio, por el que se regula el sistema geodésico de referencia oficial en España. Las hojas a escala 1:5.000 resultan de dividir la correspondiente hoja del MTN50 en sesenta y cuatro partes. La Comunitat Valenciana se divide en 3.087 hojas, la superficie aproximada que cubre cada hoja es de 820Ha (3,75 x 2,5 km).
